CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mount Union finished the 2016-17 year ranked No. 18 in the nation in the final Learfield Sports Directors Cup NCAA Division III standings.

The Purple Raiders are the highest ranked NCAA Division III team in Ohio.

The award administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) ranks athletic departments based on their national team finishes.

There are 450 NCAA Division III schools nationwide.

The spring season was headlined by the men's track and field team placing third in the nation at the NCAA Championships this past weekend with six All-American performances including a national title in the 4x400 meter relay.

The Raiders women's track and field team won a national title in the 4x100 meter relay and placed 30th at the same NCAA meet.

Two other teams made national competition as the women's golf team made it to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year and placed 17th while the women's lacrosse team made its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and advanced to the regional semifinals (round of 16).

In the winter, Mount Union had individual performances in the following NCAA Championship events -- women's swimming, wrestling and men's and women's indoor track and field.

The Purple Raiders men's track and field team placed fifth with four All-American performances while the women's track team had an All-American.

Dana Lautenschleger (Solon/Solon) was an All-American in two events at the NCAA Swimming Championships and Alec Cotton (Hartville/Lake) competed at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

During the fall, Mount Union's football team advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III football playoffs for a record 22nd straight year and the men's cross country team ran in the NCAA Division III Championships for a 21st time and the Raiders placed 28th.

The women's soccer team claimed the school's first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament and lost a tough 2-1 game in the first round to No. 3 in the nation Trinty (Texas).

The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
