Baseball Bats Silenced By Berg at OAC Tournament; Raiders Play John Carroll Friday 2pm
MARIETTA, Ohio -- No. 2 seed Mount Union was held to one run on five hits in a 6-1 loss to No. 3 seed Heidelberg in the first round of the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta, Ohio.
Heidelberg (26-15) advances to play top-seed and host Marietta, an 8-1 winner over No. 4 seed John Carroll, in a semifinal game at 11 am Friday.
Mount Union (27-14) and John Carroll meet in an elimination game at 2 pm.
Heidelberg sophomore pitcher Chris Thomas allowed only one run and struck out seven in his first complete game of his career.
At the plate, senior Elvin Williams had three hits and drove in four runs with two coming on his first home run of the season in the seventh inning that extended the lead to 6-0. Williams had a single and drove in two other runs with a double in the third inning.
The Purple Raiders lone run came in the seventh inning as sophomore catcher C.J. Stotler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) started the inning with a single, moved to third on a double from freshman Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) and came home on a sacrifice fly RBI from freshman Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville).
Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) went 6.2 innings allowing all six runs and striking out two to take his first loss since March 18.
