Baseball's Record Setting Season Ends in OAC Tournament Semifinals
MARIETTA, Ohio -- Mount Union lost to Heidelberg, 16-3, in the semifinals of the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Friday night at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta, Ohio.
The Purple Raiders (28-15) end the season with a school-record 28 wins and will wait for word Monday from the NCAA if they will receive one of 16 national at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament.
Heidelberg (27-16) advances to Saturday's 12 pm championship round where it must defeat No. 1 ranked Marietta twice to win the title.
Mount Union started the game with a 2-0 lead scoring a run in the second on a sacrifice fly RBI from Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) and another in the third on a fielders' choice RBI from Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic).
Heidelberg took the lead with a five-run third inning with the big hit coming on a three-run home run from Elvin Williams.
The Berg tacked on one more in the fourth and three in the fifth to lead 9-2, before Mount Union got a run back with a C.J. Stotler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) RBI single in the sixth to make it 9-3.
Heidelberg got that run back in the seventh then put the gamw away with six in the eighth for the 13-6 final.
Stotler finished the game with three hits to lead the Raiders at the plate.
Slyvester Nino went the distance on the mound for Heidelberg as he scattered eight hits over nine innings for the win.
