Baseball: Raiders Sweep Greensboro (N.C.) to Open Season
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Two strong starters from junior pitchers Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Matt Murzynski (Mentor/Lake Catholic) led Mount Union's baseball team to 2-1 and 6-1 season opening wins against Greensboro (N.C.) Sunday in Lakeland, Florida.
The duo combined for 17 strikeouts over 13.0 innings as Mount Union is 2-0 to start the season.
Carlino struck out nine and scattered seven hits over seven innings for the complete game victory in a 2-1 Purple Raider win in the opener.
Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongville), who had three hits over the two games, got his first hit in the first inning of game one and later scored on an RBI ground out from Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone).
Greensboro (9-10) rallied in the seventh as a leadoff walk would come around to score and the Pride had the tying run on third and winning run on second with one out when Mount Union shortstop Lee Grosscup (Green/Green) snagged a line drive and doubled off the runner on the second to end the game.
Murzynski started game two by retiring the first 11 Greensboro hitters in order as he struck out eight over 6.0 innings to pick up his first win of the season.
His offense helped him early with three runs in the first inning as Carlino, Mohney and Knott each had two-out RBI singles to give Mount Union an early 3-0 lead.
A bases loaded walk to Steve Mitch (Maple Heights/Trinity) scored another run in the third to make it 4-0.
Mount Union tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth as Mathis started the fifth with a triple then scored on a Carlino sacrifice fly, then Mathis drove in a run with a single in the sixth.
The Raiders belted out 18 hits in the doubleheader as Grosscup had four and Mohney had three.
Mount Union plays a pair of games against Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) Monday at 9:30 am in Winter Haven, Fla.
