ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union split a pair of games with No. 3 ranked Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball series Thursday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders stand at 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the OAC while Marietta moves to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.
In game one, Mount Union junior hurler Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) scattered eight hits over six innings with four strikeouts as he moved to 4-1 on the season.
It was more than enough for the Raiders offense that pounded out 15 hits and scored 13 runs.
Mount Union jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth.
The Pioneers cut the lead in half with two runs in the fifth before the Raiders exploded for nine runs in the sixth and went on to the 13-2 win.
Seven different Raiders had hits led by freshman Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley), who had four hits and drove in two runs and junior Lee Grosscup (Green/Green), who drove in two runs on a pair of hits.
Mike Mulvey took his first loss of the season on the mound for Marietta.
In game two, Marietta freshman pitcher Jason Byers allowed Mount Union only four hits and struck out 11 as the Pioneers scored a 6-0 win.
It marked the first time in 34 games dating back to last season that Mount Union was shut out in a game.
Christian Demko drove in two runs for the Pioneers that scored their first run in the fifth inning then put four on the board in the seventh and another in the eighth.
Sophomore pitcher Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) took the loss for the Raiders.
Mount Union stays home hosting Baldwin Wallace in an OAC doubleheader Saturday at 1 pm at 23rd Street Field.
