Mount Union's baseball team travels to John Carroll for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday at 1 pm in University Heights.
The Purple Raiders (11-9, 2-4 OAC) have dropped three-straight conference games while John Carroll (15-8, 4-2 OAC) are tied with Otterbein in third place in the OAC after sweeping a pair of games from Wilmington this past weekend.
The teams are two of the top hitting teams in the conference as the Blue Streaks are second with a .323 batting average while Mount Union is closely behind in third place at .322.
John Carroll is led by conference's top hitter in junior Mitchell Herringshaw, who has an OAC best .458 batting average and 14 doubles. Senior Connor Marrero is fifth in the conference in hitting at .433.
At the top of the Mount Union lineup is junior Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) with a .433 batting average which is sixth-best in the conference.
A pair of freshman have come on in the last week and made some contributions as Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) hit .500 (6-of-12) over that span with seven runs scored while Mitchell Lake (Orwell/Grand Valley) had eight hits with a double and a triple.
Both teams are in the middle of conference in pitching as John Carroll is ranked fourth with a 4.24 earned run average and Mount Union is sixth with a 4.60 earned run average.
Blue Streak freshman Anthony Lapaglia is 4-0 and ranked No. 8 in the OAC with a 2.53 earned run average while sophomore Andrew Doring is 2-0 and among conference leaders with 27 strikeouts.
For the Raiders, junior Zach Carlino has pitched both of their OAC wins and is 4-1 with two saves, 31 strikeouts and his 2.51 earned run average is seventh-best in the conference.
Mount Union plays a non-conference single nine-inning game against Wittenberg Thursday at 4 pm at 23rd Street Field in Alliance then returns to conference play Saturday at 1 pm at Ohio Northern.
