UNIVERSITY HTS., Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball split a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference baseball games Friday at John Carroll in suburban Cleveland.  The Purple Raiders won the first game 4-2 then fell in game two 5-2.

The split leaves Mount Union at 12-10 overall and 3-5 in the OAC while John Carroll is 16-9 and 5-3 in the OAC.

In the opener, junior Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) scattered seven hits and struck out four in a complete game victory to go to 5-1 on the season and lead the Raiders to a 4-2 win in game one.

John Carroll pushed a run across in the first before Mount Union scored four unanswered runs.

The Raiders got a run in the third on an RBI single from Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf).  Mount Union then started the fourth inning with three straight hits and Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) scored on a wild pitch then Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) drove in another run on a single to make the score 3-1.

Mount Union then pushed across an unearned run in the fifth on a Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) on a double to left field.

John Carroll rallied with a run in the sixth and got the leadoff hitter aboard in the seventh before Carlino slammed the door for the win.

Olasz, Jakubik and Mohney each had two hits to lead the Raiders.

Jimmy Spagna pitched a complete game for John Carroll and struck out five in defeat.

Mount Union took a 1-0 lead in game two with a run in the second inning as Carlino scored on a wild pitch.

John Carroll tied the game on an RBI single from Mitchell Herringshaw in the third then Spagna got a little payback as he hit a three-run home run to put the Blue Streaks up 4-1.

John Carroll tacked on another run in the fourth to increase the lead to 5-1.

Mount Union started to rally with a run in the sixth on a Jakubik sacrifice fly then got the tying run to the plate in the ninth before John Carroll closer Zach Verner struck out the side.

Those three strikeouts were part of 13 pitched by John Carroll in the game as starter Aaron Lapaglia moved to 5-0 as he struck out eight over the first six innings.

Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) struck out six over the first six innings and took the loss for the Raiders.

Mount Union plays two OAC games Saturday at 1pm at Ohio Northern University in Ada.
