PREVIEW: Baseball Starts Key Week of OAC Play Today at Ohio Northern

Mount Union's baseball team begins a key stretch of six Ohio Athletic Conference games this week Monday at 1 pm with a series at Ohio Northern University in Ada.

The Purple Raiders (12-11) and Polar Bears (12-13) are both tied with 3-5 records in conference play.  The results of these games along with Mount Union's scheduled conference games home Tuesday against Capital and Saturday at Heidelberg will go a long way in determining if the Purple Raiders will make the four-team conference tournament.

Mount Union is third in the OAC in hitting with a .315 batting average and the Purple Raiders are led at the plate by the duo of Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) and Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville), who are sixth and seventh in the conference in batting average respectively.

Knott is hitting .423 with six doubles, three triples and 21 RBI while Morino is hitting .413 with eight doubles and 22 RBI.

The Raiders are ranked sixth in the OAC in earned run average at 4.88 and Matt Murzynski (Mentor/Lake Catholic) and Tom Bekelesky (Akron/Firestone) are scheduled to start at Ohio Northern.

Murzynski is 2-3 with a 5.47 ERA and has 23 strikeouts in 26.1 innings pitched while Bekelesky is 1-1 with a 6.48 ERA and has eight strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched.

The Polar Bears have won three of their last five games including conference splits with Heidelberg and Otterbein.

Ohio Northern has a team batting average of .280 which is eighth best in the conference. Nick Eltzroth is the team's top hitter with eight doubles and a .326 batting average while Cory Martin has driven in a team-best 20 runs.

Eltzroth is also tied for team lead in pitching victories with three, while ace Austin Price (3-2, 40K's) pitched on Sunday.

The Polar Bears have a team ERA of 5.73 which ranks eighth in the conference.
