Baseball: Late Inning Surge Sends Baseball to Loss at Allegheny
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- A five-run eighth inning allowed Allegheny (Pa.) to score a 6-4 win over Mount Union in a non-conference baseball game Thursday in Meadville, Pa.
The game was tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning when Allegheny had five hits including three doubles to push across five runs and take a 6-1 lead.
The Purple Raiders rallied in the top half of the ninth inning as Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) drove in two runs and Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) drove in another run with a double to represent the tying run on second base. Allegheny went to the pen and Mike Pezzone, who also drove in two runs at the plate, came on to get a pair of strikeouts and the save.
Frank Brank picked up the win in 2.1 innings of relief work for the Gators while Mike Letterle (Glenshaw, Pa./Fox Chapel) took the loss in relief for Mount Union.
Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) had three hits and Sherwood had two hits to lead the Raiders at the plate.
Mount Union returns to Ohio Athletic Conference action Saturday at 1 pm with a doubleheader at Wilmington.
