Baseball: Raiders Clinch OAC Tournament Bid With Sweep at Muskingum
NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball clinched its third straight Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament bid with 8-5 and 15-8 wins Saturday at Muskingum.
The Purple Raiders have won four-straight games, are 20-15 overall and at 11-7 in the OAC will be the No. 3 seed in next week's conference tournament at Marietta. Mount Union will play No. 2 seed John Carroll while regular season champion Marietta and Otterbein will meet Thursday, May 9.
The first game was tied at 1-1 heading into the third inning when Mount Union plated five runs with big hit coming came from Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville), who drove in three runs on a bases loaded triple.
Muskingum rallied with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth that chased Mount Union ace Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) but Gino Ceriani (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) got the final out in the sixth and closer Brandon Bell (Strattonville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) picked up his fourth save of the season with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Carlino picked up his eighth win of the season on the mound for the Raiders then picked up his bat in game two and had a season-high three hits and drove in four runs as Mount Union belted out 21 hits in a 15-8 win in game two.
The 21 hits matches the second most in a game this season for the Raiders as a total of seven different players had multiple hits.
Jakubik had four hits and drove in a pair of runs, Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) had three hits, Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) drove in three runs on two hits, Knott and Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) each drove in two runs.
Mount Union led 7-0 in the top of the fifth inning but Muskingum rallied to tie the game with a seven-run fifth before the Raiders scored seven unanswered over the next two innings to put the game away.
Ceriani picked up the win out of the bullpen.
