Baseball: Raiders Rally to Beat John Carroll at OAC Tournament
MARIETTA, Ohio -- No. 3 seed Mount Union scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning to rally for a 7-3 win over No. 2 seed John Carroll Thursday at the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta.
Mount Union (21-16) advances to face No. 4 seed Otterbein, who upset regular season champion and top-seed Marietta, 7-1, in a semifinal game Friday morning at 11 am.
After 4.5 scoreless innings, John Carroll (25-15) got a lead off walk in the fifth that would eventually score on a Jimmy Spagna single to give the Blue Streaks a 1-0 win.
The Purple Raiders would tie the game in the top of the sixth in similar fashion as Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) drew a lead off walk, stole second then scored on a single from Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak).
Joe Veltri hit a double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth that scored two runs and gave John Carroll back the lead at 3-1.
The Raiders, who had been held to four hits entering the eighth, finally got things going as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs on six hits.
After a lead off walk to Mathis, Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) had a double, Knott then drove in a run on an infield single before Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) executed a safety squeeze down the first base line to drive in a run. Later in the frame, Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) had an RBI single, Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) drove in two runs with a double down the left field line and Ben Atkinson (Carrollton/Carrollton) was hit bases loaded to bring in a run and complete the big inning and give Mount Union a 7-3 lead.
Knott and Olasz both drove in two runs on two hits for Mount Union.
Mount Union ace Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) went the first 6.0 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits but it was reliever Gino Ceriani (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln), who came up big as he did not allow a hit over the final three innings to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Aaron Miller had three hits while Veltri drove in two runs on two hits to lead John Carroll.
Kevin Rosinski allowed four runs in 1.1 innings of relief to take the loss for the Blue Streaks.
John Carroll and Marietta meet in an elimination game at 2 pm.
