No. 3 seed Mount Union plays No. 4 seed Otterbein in a semifinal game of the 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Friday at 11 am at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta.
The winner of today's game advances to Saturday's championship game at noon and will have to be defeated twice that day. The loser will come back Friday at 5 pm and play an elimination game against the winner of a 2 pm elminiation game between No. 1 seed Marietta and No. 2 seed John Carroll.
Mount Union (21-16) is making its third-straight and 14th overall tournament apperance with a 10-24-1 record in tournament play. The Raiders tied Marietta for the OAC Tournament crown in 1970. Mount Union has made it to the championship round three times (1970, 1999, 2002).
The Raiders may be the youngest team in the field as the roster has no seniors but experience as a deep junior class has been part of tournament runs each of the last three seasons.
Mount Union is led by 17-year head coach Paul Hesse. Hesse has a 333-310-3 record and is the winningest baseball coach in school history.
The projected starting pitcher for Mount Union is sophomore Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville), who has a record of 2-3 with a save, a 4.08 ERA and 34 strikeouts.
At the plate, sophomore third baseman Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) has had a super season as he is second in the conference with a .418 batting average. He leads the team with 13 doubles and is second on the squad with 28 runs batted in.
Junior first baseman Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) has a team-best 32 runs batted in, is hitting .400 with 52 hits.
The duo lead a Raider team that is third in the conference in hitting with a .306 batting average.
Junior Ricky Olasz (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs in yesterday's 7-3 win over John Carroll.
Otterbein (25-15) is making its 20th tournament appearance and the Cardinals have a 29-30 record with five tournament titles -- the last of those in 2007.
Senior catcher Wes Meadows is hitting .411 and tops the conference with nine home runs while sophomore shortstop Sean Kettering has hit a league-best 49 runs batted in for the Cardinals.
Meadows might pitch today and he is 6-1 with three complete games and 50 strikeouts in 48.1 innings.
