Baseball Falls to Top-Seeded Manchester 12-3 at NCAA Mideast Regional
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – No. 8 seed Mount Union's baseball team lost to No. 1 seed Manchester University 12-3 Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at Art Nehf Field.
With the loss, the Purple Raiders fall to 26-14 and will take on the No. 4 seed Illinois Wesleyan Thursday, May 16th at 10 am in an elimination game.
Manchester (36-5-1) advances to take on No. 5 Washington and Jefferson Thursday, May 16 at 4:30 pm as Wash. & Jeff. defeated Illinois Wesleyan 5-3 on Wednesday.
The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 in the bottom of the first as they took the 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single by Trevor Kimm. Manchester added two more runs as Cody Schell hit a two RBI double to left centerfield.
Manchester's Corey Marchant led the Spartans with four RBI with a double in the fourth and a three-run home run in the seventh inning as Manchester went on for the 12-3 victory.
Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) led the Raiders with two hits as Olasz led the team with two RBI.
Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) took the loss for the Raiders allowing six earned runs with four walks and one strike out in 5.0 innings of work. Carlino falls to 8-2 on the season as he allowed the most runs in a game this season.
Justin Scott got the win for the Spartans allowing no runs on three hits in 7.0 innings of work for Manchester. He finished the day with three strike outs and one walk.
