AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Mount Union's baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 4-3 extra inning win and an 11-0 rout of Trine Sunday at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.
In the first game, Anthony Morino (Strongsville/Strongsville) had a walk off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand the Purple Raiders the win.
Trine (0-2) took a 2-0 lead in the game with a pair of runs in the third inning before Mount Union came back with a run in the fourth as Steve Mitch (Sagamore Hills/Trinity) had a one-out double then scored on a Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) double to make the score 2-1.
The Thunder would extend their lead to 3-2 with a run in the fifth then Mount Union would tie the game in the bottom half of the same inning on a two-out, two-RBI single from Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak).
The score would stay tied until the bottom of the eighth as C.J. Stotler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) would lead off the inning with a single. He would be lifted for pinch runner Ben Atkinson (Carrollton/Carrollton) would move to second on a sacrifice then with two outs score on Morino's single.
Tom Bekelesky (Akron/Firestone) would pick up the win in the relieff for the Raiders.
The Raider bats got going in the nightcap as Mount Union would crank out 18 hits and score 11 runs.
Lee Grosscup (Green/Green) would drive in four runs on four hits and Knott would drive in two runs on three hits to pace the offense.
This was all more than enough for Mount Union starter Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) as he scattered three hits and struck out four over seven innings to pick up the complete game win.
Mount Union is back on the field tomorrow with single games against Iowa Wesleyan and Houghton (N.Y.).
