Baseball: #20 Mount Union Splits a Pair With Walsh in Pennsylvania
WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. -- No. 20 ranked Mount Union split a pair of baseball games with NCAA Division II Walsh losing the opener 7-3 and winning the nightcap 12-4 in a doubleheader played at West Mifflin High School in West Mifflin, Pa.
The Purple Raiders are 10-1 overall while Walsh is 8-10 overall.
Mount Union belted out 11 hits in the opener but only plated three runs and led 3-2 in the eighth when Walsh scored five runs and held on as the Raiders loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth for a 7-3 win.
Gino Cerani (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) took the loss in relief for the Raiders.
Jordan Shank had three hits for the Cavaliers while Danny Roper pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to get the win and Neal Edwards got a two inning save.
The Raiders got the bats going again in the second game with 16 hits and plated 12 runs -- scoring in six different innings.
Knott and Jeff Bennett (Uniontown/Lake) both had three hits and drove in two runs while Knott hit his first home run of the season -- a solo shot to left field in the third inning.
Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) and Grosscup also had two hits and drove in two runs.
Mount Union starting Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) improved to 3-0 on the season as he spread out six hits over the first six innings and struck out four.
Mount Union is scheduled to open the home portion of its schedule Monday, March 17 at 3 pm with a single 9-inning game against Thiel (Pa.) at 23rd Street Field.
