Baseball: Mount Union Finishes Season With Sweep at Otterbein
WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team rallied for a pair of wins 8-7 and 4-2 to finish the 2014 season with a sweep at Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference series Saturday in Westerville.
The Purple Raiders close out the season with a 24-10 overall record and a 10-8 record in the OAC. The 24 wins are the second most in a single season in school history.
In game one, Mount Union had a six-run third inning to take a 6-0 lead, before Otterbein scored seven unanswered from the third to fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
The Raiders scored a pair of runs in the sixth as Lee Grosscup (Green/Green) tied the game with a sacrifice fly RBI then Evan Knott (Canton/GlenOak) followed with an RBI single that gave the Raiders an 8-7 lead.
Mount Union starter Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) then did not allow a hit from the sixth through the eighth as he went 8.0 innings and struck out four to get the win and move to 4-2.
Gino Ceriani (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the save for the Raiders.
In game two, Otterbein pushed a run across in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead before Mount Union scored a pair of unearned runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
Otterbein tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third and it stayed that way until the sixth inning. With two outs in the sixth, Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) and Mohney each reached on singles then Bennett had a two-run double that gave the Raiders a 4-2 lead.
Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) started for the Raiders and allowed two runs on three hits over the first 5.0 innings to get his seventh win of the season. Kyle Toma (Strongsville/Strongsville) came on in relief and allowed only one hit over 3.0 innings while Matt Murzynski (Mentor/Lake Catholic) pitched the ninth for the save.
