Baseball: Mount Union Plays Westminster and Heidelberg This Week

Mount Union's baseball team has pair of doubleheaders this week Wednesday at Westminster (Pa.) then home Friday against Heidelberg.

The Purple Raiders are 10-7 overall (1-3 OAC) and have won two of their last three games.

Mount Union is hitting .299 as a team and the Raiders as sophomore first baseman/designated hitter Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) leads the team with a .379 batting average.  Senior second baseman Sean Mohney (Lodi/Cloverleaf) has a team-best 14 RBI and six doubles as well.

Junior catcher James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett) hit .571 last week as he 8-for-14 and drove in three runs.  Senior right fielder Justin Jakubik (Strongsville/Strongsville) drove in four runs and had his first home run of the season last week.

The Raider pitching staff has a team earned run average of 4.92.  Junior Kyle Toma (Strongsville/Strongsville) is 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 28.1 innings pitched.  He has a pair of complete games and 14 strikeouts.  

Toma went 7.0 innings and allowed only two earned runs to get the win in a 5-4 game two win at Ohio Northern last Saturday.  Scott Chase (North Ridgeville/St. Ignatius) got the final four outs of that game to pick up his third save of the season.

Fellow junior Wes Kemp (Uniontown/Lake) has been the other starter in OAC games and he is 2-2 with a 5.68 ERA in 25.1 innings along with a team-best 15 strikeouts.  Senior Josh Pryor (Cortland/Lakeview) has been third starter and he is 1-1 on the year with 13 strikeouts and a 5.32 ERA.

Westminster is 9-11 on the season and the Titans have lost four straight games.

Sean Coyne is hitting .448 and Jake Haubrich is batting .368 with 14 RBI on the season as Westminster is hitting .307 as a team.

John Jones is 4-0 with four complete games to lead a pitching staff that has a 5.56 ERA.

Heidelberg, ranked No. 6 in the nation, is 16-1 on the season and on an eight-game winning streak.

The Berg is second in the OAC in pitching with a 3.30 earned run average and fourth in hitting with a .304 batting average.   

Christian Verde is among the league leaders in batting with a .415 batting average and Eric Monroe has driven in 17 runs and is one of five Heidelberg hitters with double digit RBI.  

On the mound, Derek Hendrixson is 3-0 with a league-best six saves along with 29 strikeouts.

SPLIT SQUAD THURSDAY

Mount Union's JV baseball team will play a pair of doubleheaders this Thursday.  At home, the Raiders will host Lakeland Community College at 2 p.m. while another twinbill will take place at Walsh also at 2 p.m.

SCHEDULE CHANGES
