ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union junior Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) hit for the cycle to spark a rally as the Purple Raiders rallied from a 7-1 deficit to beat Hiram 20-8 in the home opener Thursday at 23rd Street Field.
Hiram (1-10) had a 7-1 lead after the top of the second inning before Scott led off the bottom of the inning with his first and the team's first home run of the season on a shot to left field.
The Terriers added a run in the third to make it 8-2, but in the bottom half of the inning Scott again sparked the Raider offense -- this time with a single that sparked a four-run inning and brought the score to 8-6. Conner Koski (Highland Hts./Mayfield) had a two-run single in the inning as well.
Scott then had an RBI double in the fourth that tied the game and the next hitter -- designated hitter Colt Turley (Millersport/Liberty Union) then had a two-run single to give Mount Union the lead at 10-8.
Scott finished off the cycle with a shot to right center field for an RBI triple in an eight-run seventh inning as the Raiders finished the game with 10 unanswered runs in the 20-8 win.
Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) came out of the pen and worked three scoreless innings for the win while Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) allowed just three hits over the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season.
Aside from Scott, Koski drove in three runs while Turley, Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor), Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range), James Weber (Auburn, Ind./Garrett), Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), Christian Stanziano (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) and Adam Bialosky (Hinkley/Medina Highland) each drove in two runs.
Mount Union (6-7) hosts Westminster (Pa.) Saturday in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at 23rd St. Field.
