ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team defeated Westminster (Pa.), 5-1 on a chilly Saturday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders win their second straight game and even their record at 7-7 while Westminster falls to 1-9 on the season.
Mount Union got its first run in the third inning when its first two batters -- Adam Bialosky (Medina/Highland) and Scott Sherwood (Mentor/Mentor) both reached being hit by the pitch. A Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) sacrfice put both runners in scoring position and the Raiders pushed a run across on a Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) ground out to lead 1-0.
The game stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when Conner Koski (Mayfield/Mayfield) drew a two-out walk, moved up to third on a single from Bialosky and both game home on an RBI double from Sherwood to make it 3-0. Piotrowski would drive in Sherwood to extend the lead to 4-0.
Westminster got on the board with a run in the eighth but Mount Union got that run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) RBI single.
On the mound, Kyle Toma (Strongsville/Strongsville) scattered two hits over the first four innings to pick up his first win of the season while Sam Clarke (Strongsville/Strongsville) allowed a run on three hits over the final five innings to get the save.
The Raiders next play Tuesday, Mar. 22 at 3 p.m. at Pitt-Greensburg in Greensburg, Pa.
