ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 25 ranked LaRoche (Pa.) handed No. 30 Mount Union its first home baseball loss, 5-4, Monday at 23rd Street Field.
The loss ends a six-game win streak for Mount Union and leaves them at 22-6 on the season while LaRoche (Pa.), a team that advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series a year ago, is 22-6 on the year and winners of 12-straight.
LaRoche took advantage of a pair of walks and two Mount Union errors to score three runs in the seventh to rally from a 3-2 deficit to take a 5-3 lead.
Mount Union tried to rally in the ninth as Joey Keleman (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) had his fourth hit of the game with a two-out single and came home on an RBI single from Kyle Spellman (Ravenna/Ravenna) to make it 5-4 but was stranded there as the Purple Raiders left 11 on base.
Cam Smith came out of the pen and pitched 4.0 innings to get the win while Cole Cogley threw the ninth for his second save of the season.
Four pitchers worked for Mount Union and Mike Martin (Independence/Independence) took the loss in relief.
Mount Union next plays an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Muskingum Wednesday at 1 p.m. in New Concord.
