Baseball: Mount Union Belts Out Season-High 18 Hits to Eliminate Marietta; Raiders in OAC Title Game

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Top seeded Mount Union eliminated second seeded Marietta and advanced to the championship round of the 2017 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament with a 7-5 victory Friday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders (31-10) play third seeded Otterbein Saturday at noon and must beat the Cardinals twice to win the conference title.

Mount Union had a season-high 18 hits as junior center fielder Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) had five of those as he went 5-for-5 and drove in three runs. The five hits tied an OAC Tournament single-game record.

Conner Koski (Mayfield Hts/Mayfield), Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) and Kyle Spellman (Ravenna/Ravenna) each had three hits for the Raiders

Mount Union led 2-1 after the first and 5-3 after three before Marietta (22-18) tied the game at 5-5 with a pair of runs in the fifth.

The Raiders retook the lead in the sixth with three straight singles all with two outs capped off by an RBI single from Goodall.

Mount Union loaded the bases to start the seventh and made the score 7-5 on a sacrifice fly from Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia).

Marietta had the tying run on base in the top of ninth before Owen made a running catch in right field to end the game.

Mount Union senior Beau Taylor (Alliance/West Branch) came out of the pen and allowed only three hits over the final 4.1 innings to get the win.
