Baseball: Mount Union Sweeps No. 18 Baldwin Wallace On the Road

BEREA, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team swept #18 Baldwin Wallace in an Ohio Athletic Conference double header with scores of 5-3 and 4-1 at Bob Fisher Field in Berea.

Christian Stanziano (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) had a big day for the Raiders as he got the game-winning RBI's on a single in the 10th inning in game one and went 4-for-9 with three runs batted in on the day. Stanziano extended his hit streak to 18 games dating back to last year which is just one off of the school record.

Game one saw Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) go eight innings giving up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Beau Taylor (3-1) (Alliance/West Branch) came out of the bullpen to get the win as he threw two innings in relief giving up just one hit.

Evan Lovick started the game for BW and went seven innings giving up two hits and two runs with six strikeouts and got a no decision. Danny Cody (2-1) came out of the bullpen and got the loss as he went three innings giving up three runs on four hits.

Both teams remained scoreless through three innings before Chase Knodle hit a homerun for the Yellow Jackets that put them up 1-0 in the fourth. BW scored again in the sixth to put them up 2-0 before Charlie Lewis (Strongsville) ripped a single that score Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range). Joe Nave (Toronto/Edison) came on as a pinch-runner and scored on a wild pitch that tied the game at two after seven.

After a scoreless eighth inning, senior Joey Keleman (North Olmsted) came up as a pinch-hitter and hit a solo homerun to put the Raiders up 3-2. BW answered with a solo homer from Dudley Taw in the ninth to tie the game at three.

That is when Stanziano ripped a two out two RBI single up the middle that scored Nathan Duliba (Berea/Berea-Midpark) and Angelo Cruz (Lorain/Elyria Catholic). Taylor shut the door on the Jacket offense in the tenth to get the win.

Game two saw the Raiders jump on Danny Cody in the top of the first as Goodall scored Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) scored Stanziano to make the score 2-0.

Noah Skladan (Amherst/Steele) goes to 4-0 on the year as he went six innings giving up one run with six strikeouts. Danny Cody picked up his second loss of the day as he gave up two runs in his only inning.

Stanziano ripped his second hit of the game that scored Niklas Kuriger (Atco, N.J./Winslow Township) to make the score 3-0 before Dudley Taw scored on a throwing error to make the score 3-1 in the fourth.

The Raiders got an insurance run in the seventh as Jimmy Scott (Holland/Toledo St. John's) started the inning with a triple and Keleman scored him with a single up the middle.

Taylor got his third save of the season in the second game as he went three innings giving up one hit with four strikeouts.

Mount Union stays on the road as they travel to Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday, April 4th with the first pitch coming at 3:00 p.m.
