ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's baseball team split their last Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season as they lost game one 7-4 and won game two 4-0 on senior day against Muskingum, Saturday at 23rd Street Field.
Game one saw the Muskies hop out to a 2-0 lead off a double from Nate Mejia that scored two runs but the Raiders answered with two of their own in the bottom half. A misplayed line drive to leftfield from Joey Keleman (North Olmsted) scored Christian Stanziano (Oberlin/Elyria Catholic) and Billy Goodall (Canfield/South Range) came around to score on a Ryan Boyd (Wooster) sacrifice fly to knot the score at 2-2.
After three straight scoreless innings from both starters, Muskingum scored in three consecutive innings. They got one in the fourth from a Luke Currie RBI single, one in the fifth to make the score 4-2, and Currie struck again with a two run homerun in the sixth to make the score 6-2.
Mount Union would not give in as they came back with two RBI groundouts from Stanziano and Goodall to make the score 6-4 through seven innings. However, Evan Hinds (5-3) got the complete game win and kept the Raiders off the board the rest of the way.
Junior Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) (5-5) picked up the loss for the Raiders as he went seven innings giving up six runs, five earned on nine hits with six strikeouts.
Game two saw senior Noah Skladan (Amherst/Steele) throw a gem for the Raiders earning his sixth win of the year. Skladan threw a complete game shutout in his final game giving up four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Senior Johnny Thombs (Chagrin Falls) had a part in all four runs for the Raiders in his final game.
After two scoreless innings, the Raiders jumped on Muskingum starting pitcher, Nolan Fernandes, for two runs in the third inning.
Thombs started the scoring for the Raiders with a double down the line that scored Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and then Thombs scored on a wild pitch two pitches later to put the Raiders up 2-0.
Junior Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) ripped a single through the left side to score Thombs and make the score 3-0 in the fifth, and another Thombs single in the seventh scored Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) for the final score of 4-0.
Skladan kept the Muskies off the base paths as they only stranded four runners in game two.
The Raiders close out the season with a 21-15 overall record and 9-9 record in the OAC.
