Baseball: Offense Stays Hot in Raiders Sweep over Lancers

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Mount Union's baseball team stayed hot as the Purple Raider offense struck for 27 hits and improved to 4-0 on the season after 12-3 and 7-4 victories over Worcester State Saturday at Osceola Heritage Park.

Seniors Scott Cooney (North Olmsted / North Olmsted) and Billy Goodall (Canfield / South Range) both tallied three hits in the 12-3 game one victory.

Senior Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa. / Plum) fanned five batters over 6.0 innings pitched while junior Brett Willner (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) only allowed one through an inning of work. 

Worcester State (0-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame plating two runs off a double and a sacrifice fly.

Mount Union tied the game at two in the top of the third off RBI singles from Cooney and sophomore Corey White (Louisville).

The Raiders later took the lead off single from Cooney that scored Goodall in the top of the third.

Senior Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) homered to left center to lead-off the top of the sixth giving the Raiders 4-2 lead. Later in the inning, Goodall hit a bases-clearing triple which widened the advantage to 7-2. 

Mount Union added five runs in the seventh headlined by a solo home run from White.

In game two, the Raiders put five runs on the board in the first sparked by a home run from Cooney and an RBI triple from Satovich.

A Lancer error in the bottom of the second resulted in the Raider lead expanding to 6-0.

Freshman Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) struck out five batters and only allowed two runs through 4.0 innings pitched. 

Worcester State put up four runs through the fourth and fifth innings to narrow the deficit to 7-4 until sophomore Eric Ostrowski (Youngstown / Jackson-Milton) pitch a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout for the victory.

Mount Union returns to the diamond on Sunday against Suffolk in a 10 a.m. doubleheader at Sanford Stadium.
