Baseball: Mount Union Pitching Dominates in Sweep over Knox

KISSIMMEE, Fla. –Mount Union's baseball team picked up a pair of wins 8-1 and 11-0 over Knox (Ill.) Saturday at Osceola Heritage to close out their spring trip. The Purple Raider improved to 9-3 on the season as Mount Union pitchers combined for 25 strikeouts between both victories.

Senior Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) fanned 10 batters over 5.0 innings of work allowing six hits for the game one win while sophomore Carson Davis (Louisville) struck out 12 batters over 6.0 innings which included striking out five straight batters for the game two victory.

Senior Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa. / Plum) tallied four hits in game one while fellow classmate Scott Cooney (North Olmsted) recorded four combined hits between the victories. 

Mount Union got on the board first in game one as senior Billy Goodall (Canfield / South Range) stole third and advanced home on an errant throw in the first inning. Later in the inning, an RBI double from sophomore Corey White (Louisville) scored a run to double the Raider lead. A Prairie Fire error allowed a run to score from third to give Mount Union a 3-0 lead.

Knox (1-6) got on the board in the following inning off an RBI single to make it 3-1, but the Raiders scored three runs in the fifth inning to push the lead to 6-1 as Cooney doubled to center.

Mount Union added two runs in the sixth inning off as senior Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley) was hit by a pitch that allowed a run to score. A sacrifice fly from Satovich sealed the 8-1 victory for the Raiders.

In game two, the Raiders plated five runs sparked by three consecutive singles from Cooney, Satovich and Owen.

Junior Shawn Baker (Uniontown / Lake) hit an RBI double to left center in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 6-0.

Mount Union had another big inning scoring five runs in the top of the sixth inning, as Owen drove in a run with a single to center field, Satovich cleared the bases with a triple and Baker singled up the middle to score Satovich from third for the 11-0 victory.

The Raiders are back on the diamond on Tuesday, March 19 facing Thiel (Pa.) starting at 2 p.m. in Greenville, Pa.
