Baseball: Offense Propels Raiders Past Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Mount Union's baseball team collected a non-conference victory over Thiel (Pa.) 14-4 Tuesday afternoon at Tomcat Park.

The Purple Raiders, now (10-3) overall, tallied 17 hits as Billy Goodall (Canfield / South Range) and Ryan Boyd (Wooster) each collected three hits and drove in two runs in the win.

Mount Union used four pitchers in the game as Billy Keller (Medina / Highland) struck out two batters over the first 4.2 innings while Tyler Gorse (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shady Side Academy) collected his first win of the season in relief.  

The Raiders got on the board first in the top of the second with an RBI single from Goodall.

Mount Union doubled their lead to 2-0 with an RBI single from Scott Cooney (North Olmsted) in the fourth. 

Bryant Kennedy (Chagrin Falls) made the score 3-0 with an RBI double in the fifth before Thiel (3-8) took the lead in the bottom frame scoring four runs.

Mount Union got four runs in the sixth headline by three consecutive RBI singles from Nate Owen (Cranberry Twp., Pa. / Seneca Valley), Boyd and Coleman Stauffer (Boardman) to retake the lead 7-4.

The Raiders then blew the game open plating seven runs in the eighth to go on to the 14-4 victory.

Mount Union begins Ohio Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Otterbein on Saturday, March 23 with the game scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Westerville.
