HIRAM, Ohio -- Mount Union's baseball team defeated Hiram College 18-6 in non-conference action Sunday at Proverbs Park.
Mount Union (11-5 overall) recorded 15 hits as Shawn Baker (Uniontown / Lake) collected three hits and drove in seven runs. Five different Purple Raiders registered two or more hits.
Mount Union used four pitchers in the game as Ben Schroth scattered three runs over 6.1 innings of work striking out six batters for the win.
The Raiders started the game with an RBI single from Baker that scored Billy Goodall (Canfield / South Range).
The Raiders added two more runs in the fifth as Cooney hit an RBI single and Baker drew a walk to extend the lead to 4-0.
Mount Union made it 6-0 with back-to-back bases loaded walks in the sixth before Hiram (4-10) got on the board with a run in the bottom frame and three runs in the seventh to shrink the lead to 6-4.
The Raiders then blew the game open scoring seven runs in the eighth highlighted by a three-run home run from Baker. Later in the inning, Corey White (Louisville) homered and Joey Nave (Toronto / Edison) singled to score Jake Smith (Salem / West Branch) to shift the score to 13-4.
Mount Union plated five runs in the ninth sparked by a grand slam homer from Smith to make the score 18-4.
The Terriers got two runs in the next half inning but the rally fell short as Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) struck out the final two batters for the 18-6 victory.
The Raiders are back in action on Wednesday, March 27 traveling to Westminster (Pa.) at 4 p.m. in New Wilmington, Pa.
