Raiders earn first sweep of season against WPI

Auburndale, FL – The Mount Union baseball team secured their first doubleheader sweep of the season on Wednesday, defeating Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in game one, 5-3, and in game two, 4-3, in the RussMatt Invitational

WPI got on the board first in the bottom of the first of game one after a catcher interference was called on the Raiders, and then an infield error brought home the game's first run.

Mount Union got on the board in the third. After the Raiders loaded the bases, Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) belted one to left that went off the left fielders glove, allowing two runs to score. Dwayne Sumler (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) I then scored on a play at home on a ground ball to second by Brian Livolsi (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) to give the Raiders a two run lead. Ryan Boyd (Wooster / Wooster) then grounded out to short that brought Gallant home and make it 4-1 Mount Union after three.

WPI then threated in the fourth with two on and nobody out, but Carson Davis (Louisville / Louisville) and the Raiders defense only allowed one to score and keep the game within two runs.

Mount Union got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Walker Marlowe (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) doubled to right center, and Nathan Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) doubled down the left field line to bring him home and make the score 5-2 Raiders.

Marlowe went 2 for 3 with a double. Gallant went 1 for 3 and led the game with two RBI's.

Davis got his first win of the season throwing a complete game. He gave up three runs, two earned runs, walked two, and struck out four.

In game two, the Raiders broke out the offense early. Gallant got the game started with a leadoff double to left center. Duliba then brought him home with an RBI single to right to give Mount Union a 1-0 lead. Trey Weaver (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin Area) then earned himself his first RBI of the season with a sac fly to center that brought home Duliba. The Raiders then added their third run of the inning on a Corey White (Louisville / Louisville) RBI double to right, scoring Livolsi.

WPI then cut the lead to one when Jordan DeDonato sent a two-run home run over the wall in left to get the Engineers on the board. The next half inning, Weaver extended the Raiders lead to 4-2 with an RBI single to left field that scored Duliba.

Dylan Neider (Wooster / Triway) came on in relief and kept the Raiders' lead intact the rest of the way. He finished the day throwing 2.1 innings, giving up 4 hits, zero runs, and striking out four.

Dylan Eaton (Amherst / Amherst Steele) got his second win of the season. He threw 4.2 innings of work, giving up five hits, and striking out five. The Raiders did not give up a walk in game two.

Weaver finished the day 2 for 2 with two RBI's to lead the team. Gallant went 3 for 4, and White ended the game going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The sweep moves the Raiders to 6-4 on the season, and 5-3 in the RussMatt Invitational. They now get set to face Dickinson (Pa.) tomorrow back at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
