Pierre Garçon Named Honorary Chairperson for 2010 National Sportsmanship Day
The Institute for International Sport has named former Mount
Union and current Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Pierre
Garçon as the honorary chairperson for 2010 National
Sportsmanship Day. Now in its 19th year, National
Sportsmanship Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 2 in
approximately 14,000 schools in the United States and around the
world.
The role of the honorary Chairperson is to serve as a goodwill
ambassador for National Sportsmanship Day, a renowned program which
fosters fair play in schools throughout the world.
Garçon succeeds former Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee,
who served in this prestigious post in 2009.
In his second season in the NFL, Garçon emerged as one of
the league's rising stars. In addition to a breakout year on
the field, he has received great acclaim for his noble efforts for
his homeland of Haiti. After the devastating earthquake hit
on January 12, Pierre has championed relief efforts at every
opportunity. Carrying a Haitian flag bearing the motto
L'Union fait la Force — “there is strength in
unity” — he has become a beacon of hope and a source of
pride for his ravaged country.
" Pierre Garçon is a role model both on and off the field
and truly embodies the spirit of National Sportsmanship Day,"
commented Dan Doyle, founder of National Sportsmanship Day said,
“Pierre Garçon is a fine player and a person of
character – the very embodiment of a great role model.
We are thrilled that he has agreed to succeed Jackie Joyner-Kersee
as our 2010 National Sportsmanship Day honorary
Chairperson.”
