Mount Union's Cecil Shorts Drafted By NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars in Fourth Round
Former Mount Union wide receiver Cecil Shorts III (Cleveland/Collinwood) was the 17th pick of fourth round (pick 114 overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Shorts joins former teammate Pierre Garcon as Mount Union modern day players to be selected in the NFL draft as Garcon was the the 36th pick of the sixth round (pick 205 overall) of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2008 NFL draft.
Mount Union's Vince Marotta '48 was drafted by the New York Giants in 1948 as he was selected in the 26th round (pick 236) as a back.
Shorts played in 55 games at Mount Union and had 259 receptions for 4,705 yards and 63 touchdowns. He had 75 rushing attempts for 492 yards with 12 TD's on the ground along with two punt returns and a kickoff return for touchdowns. In total, he accounted for nearly 6,000 all-purpose yards (5,989 yards/108.9 yards per game).
His 63 receiving touchdowns is second all-time in NCAA Division III history just ahead of the 60 of his former college teammate and current Indianapolis Colts receiver Pierre Garcon. Garcon was the last Purple Raiders that participated in the NFL Combine.
The 4,705 receiving yards is the third highest total in Division III history.
Shorts is a three-time All-American, the 2008 and 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Ed Sherman Award Winner (given to the conference's top wide reciever) and the 2009 D3football.com National Offensive Player of the Year.
