The University of Mount Union and Bethany (W.Va.) College have inked a deal to play a home and home non-conference football series in 2014 and 2015.
The 2014 game will be Saturday, September 6 at 1:30 pm in Bethany, West Virginia while the 2015 game will be Saturday, September 5 at 1:30 pm at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, Ohio.
The teams have meet eight previous times but the 2014 game will be the first game between the teams since 1965. Mount Union holds a 7-0-1 lead in the all-time series.
Mount Union's last three non-conference opponents have all experienced post-season success in and around the time of the series with the Purple Raiders. This year's and 2013 non-conference opponent Franklin (Ind.) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Playoffs this past season, Wisconsin-Oshkosh – the 2010 and 2011 opponent -- is playing this weekend in the NCAA Playoff semifinals while St. John Fisher (N.Y.) – the 2008 and 2009 opponent – just made the post-season for a 10th consecutive season.
"We have played junior varsity games against Bethany and respect work that Coach Weaver and his staff are doing with their program," commented Mount Union athletic director and head football coach Larry Kehres. "We are excited to have an opponent that is a reasonable distance to allow more of our students, alumni, parents and fans the opportunity to be part of the experience."
