Football: #1 Mount Union Dominates Ohio Northern in 58-7 Win

ADA, Ohio – No. 1 ranked Mount Union dominated Ohio Northern with a 58-7 victory in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game in Ada.

The Purple Raiders (4-0, 3-0 OAC) extended the nation's longest winning streak to 19 games, posted their 77th straight regular season win and 113th consecutive road regular season win.

The Mount Union defense shut down the Polar Bears (2-2, 1-2 OAC) holding them to 36 yards in the first quarter, 82 yards at halftime and 160 total yards for the game.

Tre Jones (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) had a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown, Tom Lally (Fairview Park/Lakewood St. Edward) had a team-high eight stops and half a sack while Alex Kocheff (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) had seven tackles and a fumble recovery to pace the unit.

This was all more than enough for an offense that generated 631 total yards as quarterback Kevin Burke (Westlake/Lakewood St. Edward) completed 18-of-21 passes for 304 yards with four touchdowns. Burke also ran for 62 yards as the Raiders chewed up 322 yards on the ground.

Backup quarterback Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) ended up leading Mount Union in rushing with 99 yards and a touchdown. Mason Minnich (Greenwich/Crestview) and Germany Woods (Cleveland/Lakewood St. Edward) each had rushing touchdowns.

Luc Meacham (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) had a career-best 110 yards receiving for Mount Union. Jack Nicholls (Galion/Galion) had seven catches for 91 yards with two touchdowns while Brian Gainer (Tampa, Fla./Steinbrenner) and Lane Clark (Perrysville, Ind./North Vermillion) each caught touchdowns.

After forcing Northern to a three and out on its first possession, Mount Union moved 47 yards on five plays and Burke hit Nicholls from 12 yards out to put the Raiders on the board. Another ONU three and out and the Raiders marched 68 yards on 12 plays with Woods punching it in on fourth down from a yard out. On the ensuing possession, Jones jumped a route, intercepted the pass and ran it back 36 yards for a score to put Mount Union up 20-0 after the first quarter.

The Raiders scored on all four of their second quarter possessions as Burke threw three touchdown passes – 26 yards to Clark, 13 yards to Nicholls and 16 yards to Gainer while Edward Ruhnke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) tacked on a 25 yard field goal on the final play of the half to put Mount Union up 44-0 at the break.

Minnich scored on a five-yard run in the third quarter and Scott had a 33 yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 58-0.

Ohio Northern avoided the shutout with a William Bodden one-yard run on fourth down with 7:28 to play.

Bodden had 32 yards rushing while Patrick Angle completed 17-of-29 passes for 106 yards to pace the Polar Bears.

Mount Union returns home to host Wilmington in an OAC game next Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 pm at Mount Union Stadium.
