COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Top ranked Mount Union forced six turnovers and held Capital to 144 total yards in an 58-3 Ohio Athletic Conference football victory on a rainy Saturday at Bernlohr Stadium in Bexley.
The Purple Raiders (6-0, 5-0 OAC) extend the nation's longest winning streak to 21 games along with winning their 79th consecutive regular season game and 113th straight regular season road win.
Sophomore linebackers LeShawn Luke (Steubenville/Steubenville) and Jonathan Gonnell (Pembroke Pines, Fla./University School, Fla.) each had a team-high 10 tackles while sophomore safety Alex Kocheff (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) forced two fumbles and recovered two fumbles to lead Mount Union.
Raider quarterback Kevin Burke (Westlake/Lakewood St. Edward) had a career rushing day as the junior ran for 157 yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns. Burke also tossed two touchdown passes as he threw for 176 yards to account for 333 of Mount Union's 551 yards of total offense.
Senior Jack Nicholls (Galion/Galion) had three receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown, sophomore Mason Minnich (Greenwich/Crestview) had 86 yards rushing and had a TD reception and a TD rush while backup quarterback Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) rushed for two more scores in the fourth quarter.
The rest of the Raiders scoring came from a 32-yard field goal from Edward Ruhnke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional).
Mount Union scored on five of its eight first half posessions to take 31-0 lead at the half.
Capital (1-5, 1-4 OAC), which did not cross midfield until its first possession of the second half avoided the shutout with a 36-yard field goal from Travis Bosanac.
Chase Longwell had 54 yards rushing to lead the Crusaders, who were held to minus-five yards passing.
Mount Union returns home to host Otterbein next Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1:30 pm for homecoming at Mount Union Stadium.
