WESTERVILLE, Ohio – No. 3 ranked Mount Union blew past Otterbein, 66-7 in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game on a blustery Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Westerville.
Sophomore running back Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) had a career-high four rushing touchdowns as he had 180 yards on the ground.
He paced a Purple Raider offense that generated 565 total yards and scored over 50 points for a school record eighth straight game as Mount Union ran its record to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the OAC.
The Raider defense also dominated Otterbein (5-3, 5-2 OAC) as the Cardinals had just three first downs, 11 rushing yards and 74 total yards on the day.
Mount Union forced three turnovers as safety Alex Kocheff (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) had a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown, Durum Alarms (Hoschton, Ga./Dacula) forced a fumble that was recovered by Josh Butler (Lorton,. Va./South County) and kicker Ed Ruhnke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) recovered a kickoff that Otterbein failed to field.
On offense, Mount Union had seven rushing touchdowns on the day as after Mitchell, Logan Nemeth (McBain, Mich./McBain), Jamal Johnson (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia) and quarterback Kevin Burke (Westlake/Lakewood St. Edward) each had one.
Burke finished the day 16-of-28 passing for 202 yards with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Sherman Wilkinson (Kettering/Fairmont).
Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) was the top receiver with 107 yards on seven catches.
Mount Union had one touchdown in each of its two quarters against a wind that was sustained at near 20 miles per hour with gusts over 30 miles per hour.
In the first quarter – against the wind – the Raiders had a touchdown on an 87-yard run from Mitchell. It was his longest run of his career and the longest play from scrimmage for Mount Union this season.
Otterbein tied the game on a drive that started on the Raiders 25-yard line as quarterback Brick Davis ran in from four yards out that left the score 7-7 after one quarter.
With the wind in the second quarter, Mount Union scored 31 points as Mitchell had a five-yard run, Kocheff had his interception return, Ruhnke kicked a 39-yard field goal, Mitchell had a three-yard run and Burke ran in from 11 yards as the Raiders took a 38-7 halftime lead.
Mitchell's fourth TD of the day was from five yards out came as the only score of the third quarter and was set up when Mount Union set up for a 35 yard field goal and holder Tim Kennedy (Hudson/Hudson) picked up the ball and ran for the first down.
Burke got the wind back to start the fourth quarter and on the first play of the period completed a touchdown pass to Wilkinson which made the score 52-7.
Two more rushing touchdowns, Nemeth on a one-yard run and Johnson on a 44-yard scamper, finished the scoring for the 66-7 final.
Mount Union plays its final regular season road game next Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 pm at Baldwin Wallace in Berea, Ohio.
