Football: #1 Mount Union Sacks Heidelberg, 59-17

TIFFIN, Ohio – No. 1 ranked Mount Union scored a 59-17 win at Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game Saturday in Tiffin.

The Purple Raiders, 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the OAC, won their 99th consecutive regular season game while Heidelberg falls to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the OAC.

Mount Union quarterback Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) threw for 296 yards and two touchdowns and ran in another, Logan Nemeth (McBain, Mich./McBain) ran for 124 yards and three touchdowns, Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) ran for two more scores while Tim Kennedy (Hudson/Hudson) had 122 yards receiving to lead an offense that cranked out 601 yards.

The Raider defense held Heidelberg to 244 yards with six quarterback sacks and two forced fumbles.  Josh Stewart (Pleasantville/Fairfield Union) had nine tackles while Tom Lally (Fairview Park/Lakewood St. Edward) had seven stops, three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.

After both teams traded punts, Mount Union covered 75 yards on a drive highlighted by a 60-yard pass play from Scott to Kennedy then Mitchell ran in it for a score to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff a 58-yard return set up the Berg in Mount Union territory and they drove to the Raiders' one-yard line before three straight stops forced a 15-yard field goal from Stephen Smith made it 7-3.

Mount Union then marched 76 yards on 11 plays and Nemeth scampered 19 yards on his first carry of the game for a score that extended the lead to 14-3 at the end of first quarter.

Scott hit Octavion Wilson (Lincoln, Del./Milford Senior) on a 38-yard touchdown pass on the Raiders first possession of the second quarter made it 21-3.

Scott got his first rushing touchdown of the game from 13 yards out to move the score to 28-3.

After three straight punts, Heidelberg drove to the Mount Union 19-yard line but a 36-yard field goal attempt was no good.

Mount Union came back on the next possession and moved 80 yards in eight plays as Nemeth ran in his second of the day from 10 yards out brought the score to 35-3.

The Raiders finished the half driving to Heidelberg three-yard-line and Jake Antel (Lakewood/Lakewood) kicked a 20-yard field goal on the final play of the half that made it 38-3 at the break.

Both teams exchanged punts to start the second half with the Mount Union punt going 71 yards off the foot of Adam Snyder (Baltimore/Liberty Union) pinning Heidelberg on its own three-yard line.  On the very next play, Lally forced a Heidelberg fumble then on the following play Mitchell ran in the touchdown to get the score to 45-3.

Nemeth had his third rushing touchdown of the day from 29 yards out as the score went to 52-3.

The score became 52-10 late in the third quarter as Heidelberg got its first touchdown on a four-yard run from Bryan Lacey.

Mount Union finished the quarter with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Skyler Scott (Carroll/Bloom Carroll) that left the score 59-10.

Heidelberg finished the scoring with a 13 yard pass from Tyler Stoyle to Demetrius Magee for the 59-17 final.

Mount Union plays on the road next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Wilmington.
