AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -- Mount Union has had the nation's top rated defense all season and that is reflected in the All-Ohio Athletic Conference football teams as the Purple Raiders swept the three defensive MVP awards.
Tom Lally (Fairview Park/Lakewood St. Edward) won the Paul Hoernemann Award for a second straight year as the OAC's top defensive lineman. Lally, a senior that is now a three-time All-OAC First Team selection, leads the team in tackles (58), tackles for loss (19.5) and sacks (14.5). It is the seventh time in eight years that a Raider has won the award named for the former Heidelberg coach. He is only the third player in conference history to win it in back-to-back years joining Matt Campbell 2001 and 2002 and Mike Hallett 1992 and 1993.
Tre Jones (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) won the Lee Tressel Award that is awarded to the conference's top defensive back. Jones has 24 stops, 10 pass breakups and an interception as the senior is on the All-OAC first team for a third year in a row. He is the 11th Raider to win the award named for the former Baldwin Wallace head coach.
Hank Spencer (Greencastle, Ind./North Putnam) won the Gene Slaughter Award given to the OAC's top linebacker. Spencer, a senior that was an All-OAC honorable mention pick in 2012 and 2013 then a first team selection in 2014, has 41 tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss. He is the 11th Raider to win the award named for the former Capital head coach.
All three were part of 19 players that received honors. There were 13 first team picks -- Roman Namdar (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) at wide receiver, Mitch Doraty (Medina/Medina) at center, Mike Frank (Willowick/Eastlake North) at offensive line, Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) at quarterback, Logan Nemeth (McBain, Mich./McBain) at running back and Jake Antel (Lakewood/Lakewood) at kicker on offense with Mike Furda (Wintersville/Indian Creek) at defensive line, Jonathan Gonell (Pembroke Pines, Fla./University School) at linebacker, Alex Kocheff (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and Will Hiteshue (Medina/Medina) defensive back spots along with Lally, Spencer and Jones on defense.
Wide receiver Tim Kennedy (Hudson/Hudson) , offensive lineman Brooks Jenkins (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head), running back Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) and defensive back Nick Rodriguez (Macedonia/Nordonia) were all second team selections while Jordan Hargrove (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) at wide receiver and Mike Vidal (Miami, Fla./Ronald Regan Doral Senior) at defensive line were honorable mention selections.
All of the selection were chosen by the conference's 10 head coaches.
