Football: Mount Union's Hank Spencer Named Academic All-American of the Year For NCAA Division III Football

AUSTIN, Texas – Mount Union senior linebacker Hank Spencer (Greencastle, Ind./North Putnam) headlines the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division III Football Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Spencer, a computer science major with a 3.99 grade-point average from Greencastle, Indiana, was voted the CoSIDA Academic All-American® of the Year for Division III football.

He is the third Purple Raider to be voted Academic All-American of the Year joining quarterback Greg Micheli in 2008 and defensive back Nick Driskill in 2012.

Spencer is a member of a Mount Union squad that is currently 12-0 and advanced to the NCAA Division III national playoff quarterfinals for the 24th straight season. This season, he was named the winner of the Gene Slaughter Award as the Ohio Athletic Conference's top linebacker, while also earning All-OAC first-team honors for the second straight year.

So far this season, Spencer has 43 tackles (12 solo) for the Purple Raiders, including 1.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and three pass breakups for the nation's top-ranked defense.

A CoSIDA Academic All-America® second-team honoree and D3football.com All-American in 2014, Spencer earned NCAA Elite 89 honors as the student-athlete with the highest G.P.A. at the NCAA Division III football finals each of the past two seasons. This season, as a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the top scholar-athlete award in college football, he has earned an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.

A three-time team captain, Spencer has aided in a variety of leadership and community service opportunities at Mount Union, including Trick or Treat with the Raiders, Habitat for Humanity and Rodman Public Library. He is also a volunteer for the Alliance Union Avenue Methodist Church.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.

Mount Union assistant to the athletic director Leonard Reich has served on CoSIDA's Academic All-America national committee since 2002.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
