SALEM, Va. -- Mount Union head coach Vince Kehres was named National Coach of the Year and senior defensive lineman Tom Lally (Fairview Park/Lakewood St. Edward) was named Defensive National Player of the Year by D3football.com.
Kehres led the Purple Raiders to a 15-0 record and the school's record 12th national title -- his first as head coach. No college football coach has won more games in his first three seasons than Kehres, who has a record of 43-2 with both losses coming in the national championship game. The 1998 Mount Union graduate has been a part of 11 of the Raiders 12 national titles as either a player, assistant coach or now head coach.
Lally had 82 tackles and set school single season records with 26.0 tackles for loss and 20.0 sacks as he helped lead a defense that led all of college football in total defense (197.6 yds/gm), scoring defense (9.3) and rushing defense (55.2 yds/gm).
Lally was also one of 10 Purple Raiders named to the D3football.com All-America teams.
The second team offense included senior running back Logan Nemeth (McBain, Mich./McBain) and junior center Mitch Doraty (Medina/Medina) and the second team defense had senior defensive back Tre Jones (Twinsburg/Twinsburg) along with senior linebacker Hank Spencer (Greencastle, Ind./North Putnam).
Senior wide reciever Roman Namdar (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) was on the third team while senior quarterback Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) and senior offensive lineman Michael Frank (Eastlake/Eastlake North) rounded out the picks as honorable mention selections.
