ALFRED, N.Y. – No. 8 ranked Mount Union 70-45 win at No. 15 ranked Alfred in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Football Championship Saturday at Yunevich Field in Alfred, N.Y.
Mount Union (12-1) advances to the national semifinals for a 22nd straight year and will play No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) – a 38-16 winner over Wheaton (Ill.) -- next Saturday, Dec. 10 at a site and time to be announced Sunday.
Freshman quarterback Dom Davis (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) accounted for 359 yards of total offense as he completed 21-of-29 passes for 251 yards with three touchdowns while also rushing for 108 yards with a score on the ground.
Senior running back Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) rushed for 123 yards on 15 carries with three touchdowns.
Senior wide receiver Tim Kennedy (Hudson/Hudson) had 105 yards on 11 catches as Mount Union had 573 yards of offense.
Alfred (12-1) quarterback Tyler Johnson completed 36-of-67 passes for 534 yards for five touchdowns.
The Saxons led the game 7-0 after returning an interception 66 yards for a score but the Raiders came right back as Davis went 5-for-5 passing on a seven-play, 59-yard drive and tied the game on a nine-yard pass to Zach Herrington (Wintersville/Steubenville Catholic Central).
Mount Union then scored three touchdowns off three Alfred turnovers to take a 28-7 lead with 14:55 left in the second quarter.
Alfred came back just two plays later and scored on a 37-yard pass from Johnson but a missed extra point made it 28-13.
Just under four minutes later, Davis ran in a score from 12 yards to extend the lead to 35-13.
Alfred scored two more times in the final seven minutes of the first half that included another missed extra point and Mount Union led 35-26 at the break.
After both teams traded possessions to open the second half, Alfred brought the score to 35-33 on a one-yard touchdown run with 5:46 left in third quarter.
Davis then engineered a seven-play drive that included a 44-yard pass play to Herrington and Mitchell scored on a two-yard run to enter the fourth quarter with a 42-33.
Mount Union then out-paced Alfred 28-12 in the final period for the 70-35 final.
