Football: #2 Mount Union Turns Over Marietta, 69-3; Raiders Force Six Turnovers

MARIETTA, Ohio – No. 2 ranked Mount Union moved to 2-0 and opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a 69-3 win over Marietta Saturday at Don Drumm Stadium.

Mount Union forced six Marietta turnovers for the game while the offense scored on seven of its eight first half possessions to get out to a 45-3 halftime lead.

Mount Union sophomore quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla./Miramar) threw five touchdowns as he was 12-of-18 passing for 275 yards.

Three of those TD passes went to senior Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), who had 125 receiving on five catches while freshman running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry/Perry) ran in for two scores as he rushed for 88 yards on seven carries to pace the offense.

Junior linebacker Danny Robinson (Massillon/Massillon Washington) had 11 tackles to lead a defense that got fumble recoveries from Austin White (Wadsworth/Wadsworth) and Tristan Bender (Loudonville/Loudonville) and interceptions from Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), Trevor Cox (Hilliard/Hilliard Darby) while two from Richard Morris (Coconut Creek, Fla./Coconut Creek) were returned for touchdowns in the second half.

The Mount Union defense held Marietta on the opening possession stopping a 4th and 1 on the Raiders' 14 yard line. The Raiders then went 58 yards before Alex Louthan (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) kicked a career-best 45-yard field goal to give Mount Union a 3-0 lead.

Defense came through again as Mount Union got a pair of interceptions on the next two Pioneer possessions. Berry got the first one that gave the Raiders the ball on the Marietta 13-yard-line then three plays later Petruccelli ran in his first career touchdown. On the next drive, Cox got one off a deflection that set up the Raiders on the Marietta 18 and Fulford hit Ruth on a six-yard TD pass to put the Raiders up 17-0.

Marietta scored on the next drive as the Pioneers drove 62 yards and settled for a 30-yard Jimmy Embrescia and it was 17-3 after the first quarter.

Fulford and Ruth got together again early in the second quarter as Ruth took a screen pass 22 yards for his second TD catch of the day and the Raiders extended their lead to 24-3.

The Mount Union defense got its third turnover of the half as Elijah Berry (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) forced a fumble recovered by White at the Marietta 35-yard-line then two plays later Petruccelli ran in his second score from 17 yards out to make it 31-3.

Fulford tossed his third TD pass of the half as Braeden Friss caught a tipped ball in the end zone and Mount Union moved the score to 38-3. On the ensuing kickoff, the special teams unit forced the fourth Marietta turnover as Kason Hooks (Kissimmee, Fla./Liberty) forced a fumble and Bender recovered it but the Pioneer defense held on four plays inside their five-yard-line to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard.

Mount Union did the ball back one more time before the break and Fulford engineered a quick three-play, 63-yard drive that ended with a 29-yard TD pass from Fulford to Justin Hill (Circleville/Jireh Prep, N.C.) that left the score 45-3.

Fulford threw his fifth TD pass of the day on the first drive of the second half with a 40-yard strike to Ruth to take it to 52-3.

The Raiders finished up with a Louthan 21-yard field goal and a pair of interception returns for TDs from Morris from 50 and 74 yards.

Mount Union hosts a pair of OAC home games the next two weeks with Baldwin Wallace next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Ohio Northern on Sept. 30 at 1:30 p.m. in Alliance.
