#2 Mount Union Purple Raiders vs Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets

The Matchup: No. 2 ranked Mount Union hosts Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Baldwin Wallace, Sat., Sept. 23 at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.

Mount Union (2-0) held Marietta on downs then got two interceptions on the Pioneers first three drives to jump out to a 17-0 lead on its way to 69-3 win in the OAC opener last Saturday. The Raiders forced six turnovers with four interceptions -- two returned for TDs by Richard Morris (Coconut Creek, Fla./Coconut Creek). D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla./Miramar) threw five touchdown passes with three going to Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) while running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry/Perry) ran for two scores to pace the offense.

Baldwin Wallace (1-1) gave No. 9 ranked John Carroll all it could handle but lost 24-21 in its OAC opener last Saturday. BW fell behind 14-0 in the second quarter but rallied to tie the game at 21-21 entering the fourth quarter. The Jackets were driving with just over a minute to play before a John Carroll interception sealed the game. Austin Smith rushed for 92 yards and a TD and Rob Wolfington had 96 yards receiving and a score on offense while Sean Nischwitz had 11 stops, two for loss and a sack to lead the defense.

The Series: This is the 56th meeting between the teams with Mount Union holding a 33-21-1 lead in the series that dates back to a 10-0 Mount Union win in 1896. The Raiders have won 22-straight meetings dating back to a 23-10 BW win in 1994 in Alliance. A year ago, BW scored first before Mount Union tallied 49 straight in a 49-7 win in Berea.

New Coach at BW: Jim Hilvert is in his first year as head coach at BW. Hilvert won back-to-back OHSAA Division II state titles the last two years at Cincinnati LaSalle H.S. -- both wins came against Massillon Perry. Prior to that, Hilvert was the coach at Thomas More (Ky.) College where he won six Presidents Athletic Conference titles and made four NCAA Playoff appearances. He is the fourth BW head coach since 1957. Mount Union has had just four head coaches since 1956 (Duke Barret, Ken Wable, Larry Kehres, Vince Kehres).

Scouting the Yellow Jackets: Baldwin Wallace returns 13 starters from a year ago. Seven of those starters are back on a defense that is second to Mount Union in the OAC in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense. Senior linebackers Sam Groff and Sean Nischwitz lead the Jackets 4-2-5 base defense while sophomore lineman Sekou Imani has 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.

On offense, senior running back Austin Smith leads the unit as he is averaging 5.0 yards a carry with a pair of scores. The junior receiver combo of Chad Steinwachs and Rob Wolfington have combined for three touchdowns. Junior quarterback Jake Hudson has completed 46-percent of his passes for 297 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Pick, Pick Six: Sophomore Richard Morris returned two interceptions for TDs at Marietta last week. The last time a Raider returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game was in 2012 when Isaiah Scott did the feat against Capital. It was the third career interception for a score for Morris, who brought one back against Wilmington a year ago. Former DB Tre Jones holds the school record for career interception returns with 5.

Gimmie Five:
Sophomore quarterback D'Angelo Fulford tossed five TD passes last week at Marietta. He is the first Raider to throw five TD passes in a game since Taurice Scott did it against Wesley in 2015. Scott threw 5 TD passes in three separate games in 2015.

Up Next: Mount Union stays home to host Ohio Northern, which comes to the stadium Sept. 30 at 1:30 p.m. for the annual homecoming contest.
