Mount Union senior defensive lineman Elijah Berry (Dublin / Dublin Scioto) has been chosen to attend the NCAA Division III Student Immersion Program at the 2018 NCAA Convention this January in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Berry is a four-year letterwinner who has played in 38 games over the past three-plus seasons. He was a member of the 2015 national championship team and played in all 14 of the Purple Raiders' games in 2016. This season he has started each of the first five games with 18 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks on the nation's No. 1 ranked total defense and scoring defense.
Off the field, Berry is a Sport Management major and Business Administration and Communication minor who has worked in the athletic department and in the sports information office.
Since 2015, the Division III Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, the Division III governance staff and the NCAA Office of Inclusion have partnered on a this program to bring ethnic minority students to the NCAA Convention. The selected students are fully funded to attend the Convention, and they are exposed to Division III, its members and its governance process. In addition to the scheduled Division III programming, grant recipients receive DiSC training, and attend welcome and debrief meetings. The goal is to build a pipeline of talented ethnic minority candidates, with an interest in Division III coaching and/or administration, in an effort to ultimately diversify the division.
The Division III Student Immersion Program is held annually in conjunction with the NCAA Convention. Ethnic minority students, preferably juniors and seniors, with a strong interest in a career in Division III athletics (coaching and/or administration) are encouraged to apply.
