Football: #2 Mount Union Finishes Off Regular Season with 31-27 Win at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – No. 2 ranked Mount Union finished its regular season with a 31-27 win at John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game Saturday at Don Shula Stadium.

It is the 26th undefeated regular season for the Purple Raiders (10-0, 9-0 OAC) who will play next Saturday at noon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Opponent and location will be announced 5:30 p.m. Sunday on NCAA.com.

Mount Union quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla./Miramar) ran for a score and threw three touchdown passes as he went 12-of-24 for 187 yards passing while Jawanza Evans-Morris (Coral Springs, Fla./Taravella) rushed for over 100 yards for the fourth time this season as he had a career-high 110 yards lead the offense.

The Raiders defense held John Carroll's offense to 17 rushing yards and 209 total yards with 4.5 sacks and an interception. Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) had nine tackles, Elijah Berry (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) and Michael Vidal (Miami, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral) had 2.5 and 2.0 sacks respectively and Danny Robinson (Massillon/Massillon Washington) had a fourth quarter interception.

Both teams traded possessions before Fulford engineered a five-play, 59-yard drive that he capped with a one-yard TD run. The touchdown was set up on a 45-yard pass from Fulford to Hill. Both teams traded punts again and the Raiders led 7-0 after one quarter.

John Carroll was forced to punt again in its first possession of the second quarter and Raiders then marched 69 yards and Fulford tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Cole Moxie (Miramar, Fla./Cypress Bay).

The Blue Streaks went three and out again and Mount Union pushed the ball down to the John Carroll eight-yard-line and got a 25-yard field goal from Alex Louthan that made it 17-0.

A 64-yard kickoff return by John Carroll set up the ensuing drive and eight plays later the Streaks got in the end zone as Anthony Moeglin found William Woods on a seven-yard score and it was 17-7 at the break.

Mount Union out-gained John Carroll 220-70 in the first half.

The Blue Streaks take the second half kick off back for a touchdown as Michael Canganelli returned it 95 yards to pull John Carroll to within three points, 17-14.

Mount Union came right back and Fulford found Luke Herrington (Wintersville/Steubenville) on a 41-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 24-14.

John Carroll answered with its longest drive of the game as the Streaks went 67-yards in 11 plays and Moeglin threw his second TD pass of the day to Woods and closed the gap to 24-21 with 6:46 left in third quarter. The Streaks got the ball back and got to the Mount Union six-yard-line before the Raiders forced a 23-yard field goal from Matt Danko to tie the game at 24-24.

Robinson gave the Raiders a lift with an interception on the final play of the third quarter. On the ensuing drive, Mount Union converted a fourth down and later Fulford threw his third TD pass of the day – a 25-yard strike to Braeden Friss (Avon/Avon) as the Raiders retook the lead 31-24.

Both teams exchanged punts and John Carroll had to settle for a 32-yard Danko field goal to make it 31-27 with five minutes to go.
