Football: #1 Mount Union Blanks The Berg, 54-0

ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 1 ranked Mount Union posted its second shutout of the season with a 54-0 victory over Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.

The Purple Raiders are 7-0 overall, 6-0 in the OAC and take the nation's longest win streak to 22 games.

Andrew Roesch (Avon) had a sack and a safety to lead a defense that held Heidelberg to 24 first half yards on 23 plays as the Raiders built a 26-0 lead. Roesch finished with 2.0 sacks, 3.0 tackles for loss as Mount Union had 5.0 sacks.

Mount Union running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry) had his second-straight over 100-yard rushing performance as he chewed up 101 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns to pace the offense.

Quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.) completed 17-of-29 passes for 280 yards with touchdown passes to Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike) and Justin Hill (Circleville). Ruth finished with six catches for 102 yards.

Quarterback Trace Reynolds completed 10-of-21 passes for 167 yards and rushed 27 times for 25 yards to lead Heidelberg (4-3, 3-3 OAC).

Mount Union punted on its first possession but the punt was downed by Malik Britt at the one-yard line and on Heidelberg's first play from scrimmage Andrew Roesch (Avon) tackled Jace Grossman in the end zone to give the Raiders a safety and a 2-0 lead.

The Raiders then took the free kick and marched 40 yards in seven plays then on fourth and goal Fulford ran it in from two yards out and Mount Union led 9-0 with 6:44 left in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter Fulford found Ruth on a short pass then he made a guy miss and ended up with a 43-yard touchdown and Mount Union pushed the lead to 16-0.

The Raiders tacked on two more scores before halftime – a two-yard Petruccelli run and 38-yard field goal by Cory Barnett (Grove City / Teays Valley) and it was 26-0 at the break.

Mount Union extended the lead to 33-0 with a two-yard Petruccelli run on the first play of the fourth quarter then after a Heidelberg three-and-out Justin Hill (Circleville) had an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown that made it 40-0.

Hill got in the end zone one more time as Fulford found him on a 41-yard touchdown catch and it was 47-0.

Backup quarterback Ernie Burkes (New Castle, Pa. / Neshannock) finished the scoring with a 54-yard touchdown run.
