ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Each week during the football season, we will give you five things to know five days before kickoff. This week the No. 1 ranked Mount Union football team finishes the regular season hosting Marietta Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Mount Union Stadium.
This is the 57th meeting between the teams with Mount Union holding a 47-8-1 lead in the series dating back to a 20-0 Mount Union win on September 23, 1933 in Alliance. The teams have met every year since 1981 and Mount Union has won all 37 of those meetings. The last Pioneer win was a 20-6 decision in 1977 in Marietta. A year ago, Mount Union forced six Marietta turnovers for the game while the offense scored on seven of its eight first half possessions to get out to a 45-3 halftime lead on their way to a 69-3 win.
- Mount Union leads the nation in tackles for loss allowed at 3.22 per game. Five juniors start across the Raiders offensive line in Sean Sherman (Hamilton / Bishop Fenwick), Jonny Todd (Canton / GlenOak), Tavis Stitka (Creston / Norwayne), Brendan Klaus (Brighton, Mich.) and Stephen Sumner (Miamisburg).
- Senior wide receiver Luke Herrington (Wintersville / Steubenville) had a pair of touchdown catches and 112 yards receving last week at Muskingum. Over the last two weeks, he has had the first two 100-yard receiving performances of his career.
- Marietta comes in at 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the OAC which already is the best season for the Pioneers since going 8-1-1 in 1995. Marietta started the season 6-0 which was its best start to a season since 1920. Junior running back Tanner Clark is fourth in NCAA Division III in rushing with 1,420 yards and third in rushing touchdowns with 19.
- The game will be broadcast LIVE on the radio on both WDPN 1310 AM and WRMU 91.1 FM while the game will also be streamed video online via pay-per-view at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/mountunion/.
