ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 1 Mount Union scored three defensive touchdowns on it way to a 49-7 win over Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference football game Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.
Two of those defensive scores came from Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side Academy) – an interception and a strip and score fumble recovery which gives him four defensive touchdowns on the season. Trey Williams (Cardington / Cardington-Lincoln) also had an interception return for a score.
They led a defense that held Marietta (7-3, 6-3 OAC) to 119 first half yards as the Purple Raiders ran out a 49-0 halftime lead. Mount Union held OAC rushing leader Tanner Clark to 26 yards on 12 carries.
It is the 27th undefeated regular season for the Purple Raiders (10-0, 9-0 OAC) who will play next Saturday at noon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Opponent and location will be announced 5:30 p.m. Sunday on NCAA.com.
Mount Union had a 35-point first quarter with a D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.) one-yard touchdown run along with a running and passing score from backup quarterback Ernie Burkes (New Castle, Pa. / Neshannock) while the Raider the defense scored twice on interception returns from Williams and Berry.
Josh Petruccelli (Perry) got going in the second quarter has he rumbled 44 yards then on the ensuing possession Berry for the second time this year stripped a ball away from an opposing player and this time went 50 yards for a score and pushed the score to 49-0 at the break.
Petruccelli posted his fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season with 109 yards on 11 carries in the first half to pace the Mount Union offense.
Marietta avoided the shutout with a Justin Bell touchdown run in the third quarter.
