Football: Four Raiders Inducted into NFF Hampshire Honor Society

DALLAS, Texas -- Four Mount Union football players -- Louis Berry (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side Academy), Lucas Herrington (Wintersville / Steubenville), Danny Robinson (Massillon / Washington) and Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike) have been inducted into the 2019 class of the Hampshire Honor Society by the National Football Foundation.

The Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. An all-time high of 1,643 players from a record 424 schools qualified for membership in the Society's 13th year. 

Nominated by their respective schools, members of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society must have:

  • Completed their final year of playing eligibility in 2018;
    • Graduated players, who have remaining eligibility but will not return to collegiate play (e.g. declared for NFL Draft or retired from football), may also be nominated.
  • Achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study;
  • Met all NCAA- or NAIA-mandated progress toward degree requirements; and
  • Been starters or significant contributors throughout the 2018 season.

The initiative has now honored 10,660 student-athletes since its inception, and the program has experienced growth every year in either members or school participation since its launch in 2007.

All four Purple Raiders honored this year were team captains this past season and will graduate this coming May.

Berry was an All-American defensive back who scored six of Mount Union's nation leading 15 defensive touchdowns this season with an NCAA Division III record four interception returns for a score, two fumble returns for scores. In fact he has had a hand in two more defensive touchdowns as he has blocked a pair of field goal attempts that were returned for scores. He was also named the Ohio Athletic Conference Lee Tressel Defensive Back of the Year and was an all-conference first team selection. Off the field, he has a 3.50 grade point average as a Marketing major

Herrington was an All-OAC first team selection, who caught 45 passes with nine touchdowns this past season. He has a 3.45 grade point average as a Biology major.

Robinson was among team leaders in tackles with 83 stops, 10.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble this past season. He was also a three-time All-OAC selection, an AP All-American, the 2018 Gene Slaughter OAC Linebacker of the Year Award, a Google Cloud Academic All-American and an NFF Postgraduate Scholarship recepient. He also has a 3.72 grade point average as a Mechanical Engineering major.

Ruth had a team-best 15 receiving touchdowns as he had 52 catches for 883 yards on his way to All-OAC second team honors. He is a two-time All-OAC pick, who also was a three-time Academic All-OAC and Academic All-District selection. He is an Exercise Science major with a 3.56 grade point average.

Mount Union won its 29th OAC title and advanced to the national title game -- Stagg Bowl for a record 21st time in 2018.
