Football: #2 Mount Union Starts Fast To Win 32nd Straight Season Opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – No. 2 ranked Mount Union got off to a fast start and ran past Rose-Hulman in a 66-14 season-opening win at Cook Stadium in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.) completed 16-of-22 passes for 288 yards with six touchdowns as the Purple Raiders won their 32nd straight season opener. 

Four of those touchdown passes went to Justin Hill (Circieville), who had five catches for 148 yards. Edwin Reed (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. / Dr. Krop) and Derrick Harvey, Jr. (Akron / Buchtel) had the other two catches.

Josh Petruccelli (Perry) rushed for 149 yards and touchdown in the first half and it was his 13th 100-yard rushing performance of his career.

The Raider defense held Rose-Hulman to 59 yards passing and 247 total yards. Andrew Roesch (Avon) had five tackles while Jessie Vail (Estero, Fla.) and Harry Bowker (St. Augustine, Fla. / Bantam Trail) each had an interception.  

After a 39-yard return on the opening kickoff by Darian Littlejohn (Baltimore, Md. / Reservoir), Mount Union scored in just two plays at Petruccelli ran for 46 yards and Fulford hit Hill on a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0, 34 seconds into the game. Petruccelli had another big run on the second drive with a 57-yard run then scored on the next play on a one-yard dive. Fulford and Hill hooked up again on a 23-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Matt Garcia got into the end zone on the Raiders first possession of the second quarter to extend the lead to 28-0.

Rose-Hulman got on the scoreboard after Noah Thomas got behind the defense and Andrew Dion hit him on a 60-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-7 with 10:18 left in the half.

Fulford and Hill connected for a third time with 7:33 left before halftime this time on a 21-yard catch and run and it was 35-7. Fulford then tossed his fourth touchdown pass of the half hitting Harvey on a nine-yard score as Mount Union led 42-7 at the break.

Fulford threw two more touchdown passes on the Raiders first two possessions of the second half finding Hill, for a fourth score, on a 63-yard pass and a 23-yard strike to Reed to make it 56-7.

Shane Welshans broke off a 68-yard touchdown run to give Rose-Hulman its second touchdown and it was 56-14 five minutes into the third quarter.

Garcia tacked on a one-yard rushing touchdown with 4:31 left in the third quarter.

The Raiders finished the scoring with a 20-yard Max Righetti (Salem) field goal for the 66-14 final.
