Football: #2 Mount Union Gets Win #800 in Home Opener

ALLIANCE -- No. 2 Mount Union (2-0, 1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) became the 16th team in college football history to win 800 games after defeating Baldwin Wallace (2-1, 1-1 OAC) 45-7 in its home opener at Mount Union Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Senior quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.,) threw four touchdowns passes and became the fifth player in school history with 100 touchdown passes. Fulford finished 20-of-31 for 272 yards and 4 TDs. He also added 62 yards rushing.

Junior running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry/Perry) had 18 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Justin Hill (Circleville) had six catches for 107 yards and 2 TDs. Senior Derrick Harvey, Jr. (Akron / Buchtel) had four receptions for 92 yards and a TD.

The Purple Raiders forced four turnovers in the game and capitalized on each of them. Mount Union finished with 454 total yards and held Baldwin Wallace to 265 yards.

Baldwin Wallace forced a three-and-out on Mount Union's first series. The Purple Raiders got their first stop after the Yellow Jackets went for it on fourth down from the Mount 40. Junior Mitch O'Hara (Avon/Lakewood St. Edward) stopped Jon Murray Jr. short of the first down to turn the ball over on downs.

Following a bad snap on a punt, Baldwin Wallace took over on the Mount 15. Mount Union's defense came up big with three straight stops and the Yellow Jackets eventually missed a 41-yard field goal.

The Raiders scored the game's first points on a 4-yard touchdown run by Petruccelli with 6:39 left in the first quarter. Cory Barnett (Grove City/Teays Valley) added the PAT to make it 7-0.

Mount Union forced the game's first turnover when senior Andrew Roesch (Avon/Avon) forced a fumble and Jesse Vail (Estero, Fla.) recovered the ball at the BW 30.

Four plays later, Barnett tied his career-long with a 41-yard field goal to give Mount Union a 10-0 lead with 4:12 left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, junior Malik Britt (Bossier City, La.,/Airline) got his first career interception and second turnover of the game for the Purple Raiders. Fulford found Harvey, Jr., for a 19-yard touchdown to give Mount Union a 17-0 lead with 12:21 left in the first half.

Fulford threw his second touchdown pass of the half when he found senior Ernie Burkes (New Castle, Pa.,/Neshannock) for a 7-yard touchdown and a 24-0 lead with 3:16 remaining in the second quarter.

The Purple Raiders closed out the first half with its third turnover and second interception after Derrick Bradley (Bradenton, Fla. / Palmetto) picked off the pass in the end zone with :11 remaining.

Hill had two of Mount Union's second half scores with touchdowns of 15 and 35 yards, respectively. Junior linebacker Drake Roach (Plainfield, N.J., /Bound Brook) closed out the scoring with a 25-yard scoop-and-score on a fumble to make it 45-7.

Senior Nate Fisette (Lancaster, Calif.,/Quartz Hill) and Kordell Ford (Massillon/Massillon) led the defense with seven tackles each. Ford also had three tackles-for-loss.

The win by the Purple Raiders was the 25th straight over Baldwin Wallace and 31st straight OAC opener dating back to 1988.
