UNIVERSITY HTS., Ohio – No. 2 ranked Mount Union smothered No. 9 ranked John Carroll 37-14 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at Don Shula Stadium.
The Purple Raider defense held the Blue Streaks to 46 total yards in the first half while the Purple Raiders offense scored on five of its six possessions to build a 30-0 lead.
D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.) had five touchdowns as he threw for three and ran for two as he went 20-for-30 passing for 258 yards and ran for 65 yards as Mount Union is now 3-0 and 2-0 in the OAC.
Two of the touchdown passes went to Justin Hill (Circleville) has he had six catches for 93 yards.
Mitch O'Hara (Avon / Lakewood St. Edward) had 7.0 tackles, 1.5 for loss to lead the Mount defense.
John Carroll (2-1, 1-1 OAC) quarterback Jake Floriea completed 14-of-31 passes for 181 yards with a touchdown.
Fulford ran it in from a yard out on the game's opening drive to cap an 18-play, 69-yard drive that took 8:44 off the clock and gave the Raiders an early 7-0 lead.
John Carroll went three-and-out on its first drive and the Raiders were forced to punt on their ensuing possession, but the Blue Streaks muffed the punt which was recovered by Mount Union's Joe Fornaro (Chesterland / West Geauga) on the JCU 36-yard line. Three plays later the Raiders cashed in as Fulford hit Hill on a nine-yard touchdown pass that made it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Mount Union was on the march again with its first possession of the second quarter as the Raiders went 68 yards on eight plays with the last 27 coming on a Josh Petruccelli (Perry) touchdown reception that pushed the lead to 27-0 at the 10:39 mark.
After another JCU three-and-out, the Raiders went to the air as Fulford found Hill on a 56-yard catch and run and after a missed extra point, the score was 27-0 with 7:29 to play in the half.
John Carroll did get a first down for the first time on the next possession and could not convert a fourth down on the Mount 35-yard line. The Raiders then finished the half with a Cory Barnett (Grove City / Teays Valley) 37-yard field goal and Mount Union led 30-0 at the half.
The Blue Streaks got on the board on the opening drive of the second half going 75 yards on 16 plays with a Michael Canganelli two-yard run and it was 30-7 after three quarters.
In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Fulford had an eight-yard touchdown run then Floriea threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Devin Limerick and it was 37-14 with 11:16 to play.
